Underwater photography has been one of my passions for over 37 years. When painting, I draw from this wealth of visual images that I bring to the surface—either in my camera or my memory. In creating a synthesis of these visions on canvas, a flow is necessary to create a fusion of the work on canvas and my underwater visions. Sometimes it is a challenge, as it was when I shifted to a less literal/realistic style in my painting. I spent a couple of challenging years incorporating different styles and materials. This painting represents a bit of a breakthrough for me—as it is the flow for which I was aiming.

By living in from of the ocean, my soul is both soothed and tempered by the ocean’s waves. Many of my Sea-Spirations series incorporates waves and ocean currents, as they are an auditory and visual part of my life that is imbedded into my subconscious. The title literally means Waterfall or Cascade of the Sea and relates to this strong surge of water that is forever flowing into my life.

This mixed media painting is an expression of hope and joy with its vibrant colors and exuberant movement of oceanic flavor. It was created during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic here in Panama, a time when the whole world has been transformed in so many ways. The effects have weighed heavy in my heart at times, but I feel that there is the hope that life will improve. Mother Sea, which I have great love for, is changing for the better with fewer people out creating less pollution.  So I stay on the positive side and hope for the best to come as more species of sea animals are less affected by man’s careless ways.

My most fervent message is that Mother Sea is an important provider of life and love and is such a fragile part of this planet. Since many species are on the verge of extinction, many of the sea animals in my paintings are hiding in the textural shapes. It is my hope is that we all treasure the beauty of what nature provides, be more aware and conscious of our daily actions and how these actions affect the ocean’s inhabitants.

I lived in Okinawa, Japan during the tsumami of 2011. This small southern Ryukyu island was not physically affected by this climatic tragedy.  However, all of us living on Okinawa felt so much sorrow for the gentle people of Fukushima. To view the images and videos was heart rattling! In 2013 I retired from my teaching job in Okinawa with a high respect for the power of the ocean. Since my home is seaside, there honestly was a tiny bit of fear when the waves broke on my seawall during the aguajes (big swells) of April 2014. This painting is a tribute to the force of Mother Sea and the huge swells of April 2104 in Playa El Palmar.

Pelicans are a part of the seascapes of most tropical oceans. They are a thrill to watch at any time. Sometimes when I look out my window, I see them pass in formation as black shadows on the lawn. Magical! In dry season when no leaves are on the trees at Palmar Point pelicans hang out there in the hundreds, guarding the hill, like the kings and queens of the shoreline.
